Moving can be a difficult and a long process, no matter if you are doing the move yourself or hiring professional movers to assist you. Downsizing, organizing, planning and packing do not have to be a grueling process! Check out this quick list of 10 moving hacks that will help you stay ahead of the moving woes and accomplish your move smoothly.

  1. Clean your New Home

If possible, take a few hours out of your day to stop by your new home and clean! Clean the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, etc. Moving into a clean environment will take the stress out of your day and save time after the move is complete.

  1. Plan your Meals

The last thing you need to worry about on the days leading up to and the day of your move is food. Plan your meals ahead of time and purge! If you are hiring professional movers, it is important to know that most moving companies will not transport frozen foods, perishables, produce, and refrigerated foods, so we recommend purging these items before your move date. Also, consider planning what you would like to eat on move-in day. Whether you plan to get take-out, go out to dinner or cook, knowing what you are going to eat during the move will be so helpful and take the stress out of trying to decide what to eat. Check out some quick recipes you can make on move-in day.

  1. Update all your Accounts

Update your address for all your accounts and utilities several weeks before moving day.

  1. Remove Dents for Carpeting

You can easily remove any dents left behind from furniture on your carpeting by placing ice cubes on the dents, let them melt and use a spoon to lift the fibers. This will make your carpeting appear more appealing to buyers and may help you get your deposit back if renting.

  1. Repair and Protect your Walls

You can easily fill in holes in your walls left behind from nails by using white ivory soap or toothpaste. Wrap a rubber band around the hammer you are using to prevent scuffing the wall when removing nails.

  1. Protect Fragile Items

If you do not have access to packing paper or bubble wrap you can easily protect fragile items using magazines, newspaper and plastic grocery bags, but beware of the ink!

  1. Over Packing Boxes

It is a good rule of thumb to limit each box to 50 lbs. when packing. Over packing a box not only increases the chances of injury during the move, but it can also compromise the stability of your packing boxes causing damage to your items. 1. Keep Hardware Together

If you are disassembling any furniture yourself, be sure to keep all screws and hardware in a labeled plastic bag. Tape the bag to the furniture itself or put it in a separate box and label it.

  1. Wrap your Utensils in Plastic Wrap

You can easily pack and transport your kitchen utensils by using plastic wrap to cover the storage container you use to house the utensils. This prevents your forks, knives, etc. from being loose inside of a box!

  1. Invest in Space Bags

Space Bags are an amazing tool to have during your move. You can maximize on space when packing by putting bulky items like coats and sweaters into the Space Bags and suck the excess air out, making the bags compact and easy to pack.
